Meet Donna

A midwife, nurse and Calmbirth practitioner based in Mackay, Queensland who is a passionate advocate of pregnancy and parenting education.

Twenty years as a midwife facilitating childbirth classes in many locations around Australia, made me realise that there was something missing from current teachings. Every week, I wondered why participation at classes didn’t guarantee the people attending would have a smooth, confident birth.

I also asked myself why women, their partners and families were not confident in asking those looking after them about what options were available, or seeking clarification on the information given to them. My goal became to help expectant parents understand that they have choices, and could ask questions of the healthcare staff that were part of their team.

Finding the answers

After months of research and discussing pregnancy and birth with countless new parents, I discovered Calmbirth – a childbirth education program that promised a calm and empowering birth experience.

I cannot describe the amazing pleasure I felt when I watched my first Calmbirth couple work calmly and confidently through their labour and birth. And I certainly never get tired of that feeling! Each new family I help to have a calm and controlled birth journey is one step closer to letting others know that a positive birth experience is possible – and that birth is a normal life event.

Labour doesn't have to be a feared event!

So many of the mothers I’ve spoken to are afraid of labour – not surprising considering the amount of horror stories we all hear about what can happen during and after. It doesn’t have to be like this.

That is so important, I’m going to say it again – it doesn’t have to be like this!

Combining my nursing and midwife qualifications and experience with ongoing training in the scientific evidence and knowledge of teaching and adult learning principles, I’ve developed a range of educational services and classes that take you right through from pregnancy to parenting in a calm, confident and – dare I say it – joyful way.

Have a read through our full range of services or take a look at what classes are coming up soon.
